Masterclass Venue
Mary Ward House, Bloomsbury, London
We are delighted that we are going to be able to hold this year’s Masterclass is Mary Ward House in Central London, a fascinating Grade one listed building built in 1898 and recently given an extensive and sensitive face-lift.
The house is an Arts and Crafts gem, one of the finest examples of the style in existence anywhere. All the rooms have natural daylight. There are wonderful decorative details, some of which are shown in the pictures below. The Dickens library was recently turned into a classroom at Yale for the film The Good Shepherd featuring Angelina Jolie and Robert De Nero. An episode of Spooks was filmed in it, and it was used in the BBC drama Brief.
Its story is as fascinating as its design, and one that fits beautifully with the ethos of EFT.

Mary Ward house was a product of the Settlement movement, started in the latter part of the 19th century with the support of distinguished figures including Thomas Carlyle, Thomas Meredith, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, William Morris, and Matthew Arnold. Its big idea was bringing together young middle-class professionals such as barristers and architects with local working people.
 |
Originally Mary Ward house was known as the Passmore Edwards Settlement after its benefactor, John Passmore Edwards, a carpenter’s son from a humble home in Cornwall who became a City journalist, MP for Salisbury, and editor of a leading newspaper. He made a fortune in the newspaper industry and spent much of it on progressive movements. He was a fervent champion of the poor and more than 70 major buildings were established in just 14 years as a result of his bequests. The Settlement in Bloomsbury was one of them.
It was founded by Mary Ward, grand-daughter of Dr Thomas Arnold of Rugby, a niece of Matthew Arnold, and famous in her lifetime as the best-selling novelist Mrs Humphrey Ward, author of more than 20 novels. She was dedicated to promoting greater equality in society and crammed the house with local residents enjoying opportunities and pleasures usually available only to the rich. There were concerts and classes and self-help groups. Holst was musical director for a time and George Bernard Shaw, Sidney Webb and Keir Hardie gave lectures there. |
Mary Ward house had a series of bedsits available free to doctors, lawyers and others in return for their agreeing to offer whatever professional help local people needed whatever time of the day or night they asked for it. Mary Ward’s work with children at the house began the Play Centre movement in England and she organised the first school for physically handicapped children in England nearby.
EFT, as one of the most efficient therapies ever for helping people and helping people to help themselves, is going to feel very much at home with the spirit of Mary Ward House.
